Collage The '20s With Della Wells

American artist, Della Wells, is renown for her collage art which tells stories about Black American experiences. Della has admitted to being inspired by the stories her mother used to tell her about life in the ‘20s. Some were true and others were fantastical, but all were inspiring enough to get Della’s imagination running. And she shares this imagination with the rest of us through her collages, paints, quilts and even dolls. Della’s work, her folktales, tells stories about the Civil Rights movement and more recently, about the political and cultural strives that still plague Black Americans.

With 100s of Della’s works in private collections, museums and galleries, it’s clear that she’s a cultural powerhouse who has left a mark (and still leaving marks) on narratives to come. See some of our favourites from her recent works below.
